1.1 Background of the Study
Films are powerful mediums for shaping public perceptions and narratives on mental health. Across the globe, mental health stigmas persist, often fueled by cultural misconceptions and limited public awareness. In Nigeria, and particularly in Langtang North Local Government Area, Plateau State, films have the potential to challenge these stigmas by presenting mental health issues in relatable, empathetic, and informative ways (Okafor & Bello, 2023). Depictions of mental health struggles in films can humanize affected individuals, foster dialogue, and promote understanding, thus contributing to a more inclusive society. However, while films are increasingly addressing such issues, their impact on mental health narratives in local contexts remains under-researched.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite global efforts to destigmatize mental health, many communities in Nigeria, including Langtang North, continue to grapple with misconceptions and lack of access to accurate information. Films, as a medium of mass communication, offer a unique opportunity to influence these narratives positively. However, the extent to which films shape mental health awareness, challenge stigma, or promote support-seeking behaviors in this region is not well-documented (Adebayo & Nwankwo, 2024). This study investigates how films impact mental health narratives in Langtang North.
